Apple has unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone and one of the company’s biggest smartphone design changes since it introduced the original iPhone in 2007.
The device folds into a compact form with a 5.4-inch outer display and opens to reveal a 7.6-inch inner screen, giving users a larger canvas for watching content, gaming and multitasking. Apple says the Duo is also its thinnest iPhone when opened.
The Duo is powered by Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, paired with a custom vapor-chamber cooling system and dual-battery architecture designed to maintain performance during demanding tasks such as gaming, multitasking and artificial-intelligence workloads.
Apple has also redesigned iOS 27 around the foldable format. When the phone is opened, users can run two applications side by side through Split View, while the system automatically adjusts content and controls as the device is folded or unfolded.
The phone includes a pair of 48-megapixel rear cameras, including a Fusion Main camera with an optical-quality 2x telephoto option and an Ultra Wide camera. A new camera system allows users to preview selfies on the outer display while using the higher-resolution rear cameras.
Apple is also positioning the Duo as an artificial-intelligence device. It includes the company’s latest Apple Intelligence features and a new version of Siri AI, which can use personal context and on-screen information to assist users. Apple says much of the AI processing is performed on-device, with Private Cloud Compute used for some tasks.
The iPhone Duo also supports Apple Pencil, expanding its potential for note-taking, creative work and productivity on the larger inner display.
Built with a titanium frame and a precision hinge, the Duo is designed to withstand repeated folding while maintaining a thin profile. Apple is offering the phone in Star White and Night Sky, with storage options ranging from 256GB to 2TB.
The starting price is $1,999 in the United States for the 256GB model, making the Duo Apple’s most expensive iPhone and placing it firmly in the premium foldable-phone market. The 2TB version costs $3,199.
Pre-orders will open on October 16, with the iPhone Duo going on sale from October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions, including the United States, United Kingdom, China, India, Japan and the United Arab Emirates.
The launch marks Apple’s entry into a foldable smartphone market already occupied by rivals including Samsung and other Android manufacturers. Rather than competing primarily on price, Apple is using its hardware, software and wider ecosystem to position the Duo as a premium alternative that combines the portability of an iPhone with a larger, tablet-like workspace.
The iPhone Duo was unveiled during Apple’s September 9 product event, the first major launch event led by CEO John Ternus since he succeeded Tim Cook earlier this month. Alongside the foldable phone, Apple introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, new Apple Watch models and AirPods 5.
