Rwanda and the European Union have signed a €40 million (approximately Rwf67 billion) financing agreement to support the transformation of the country’s agricultural sector into a more modern, inclusive and climate-resilient industry.
The funding will be channelled through the HANGARIBIHE Programme, a new initiative designed to strengthen climate-smart agriculture, improve sustainable land management, expand irrigation systems and enhance resilience to the growing impacts of climate change.
The partnership comes as Rwanda continues to prioritize agricultural modernization to improve food security, increase productivity and create more sustainable livelihoods for farmers. Agriculture remains one of the country’s largest employers and a key pillar of the economy, investing in the sector critical to long-term economic growth.
Under the agreement, the programme will support farming practices that help communities adapt to changing weather patterns while protecting natural resources. Investments in irrigation and sustainable land management are also expected to reduce the impact of droughts and other climate-related shocks that affect agricultural production.
The financing also aligns with Rwanda’s broader development agenda, which emphasizes climate resilience, environmental sustainability and increased agricultural productivity as essential drivers of national development.
Through the HANGARIBIHE Programme, the government and its European partners hope to equip farmers with the tools, infrastructure and knowledge needed to build a more resilient agricultural sector capable of supporting food security and economic prosperity for years to come.
