Rwanda celebrated a landmark moment in its sporting journey on Sunday as RSSB Tigers defeated Angola’s Petro de Luanda 90-88 to win the 2026 Basketball Africa League (BAL) Championship at BK Arena in Kigali.
The victory marks the first BAL title won by a Rwandan team, adding another milestone to the country’s growing profile as a destination for major international sporting events.
Beyond the result on the court, the championship highlighted the continued growth of the BAL and Rwanda’s role in hosting continental competitions. The 2026 season attracted more than 110,000 spectators, the highest attendance in league history, while generating over 1.1 billion social media views and securing support from a record 22 commercial and institutional partners.
The final in Kigali drew basketball leaders, international sports executives, government officials, and business stakeholders from across Africa and beyond. Among those in attendance were NBA and FIBA executives, representatives from NBA Africa, and prominent figures in global basketball.
The championship is another boost for Rwanda’s ambitions to position itself as a hub for international events. Over recent years, Kigali has hosted a range of major sporting, business, and diplomatic gatherings, with BK Arena becoming one of Africa’s premier venues for continental competitions.
For the BAL, the 2026 season demonstrated increasing commercial appeal and audience reach, reflecting the growing popularity of professional basketball across the continent. The league’s expansion in fan engagement, partnerships, and media consumption underscores the broader growth of Africa’s sports industry.
RSSB Tigers’ historic triumph now stands as a defining moment for Rwandan basketball and a significant achievement for the country’s wider sports development agenda, showcasing Rwanda’s ability not only to host major events but also to compete successfully on Africa’s biggest sporting stages.
