The announcement was made by Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, following bilateral talks with Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Olivier Jean Nduhungirehe.
Mudavadi said the agreement demonstrates the strong and growing partnership between Kenya and Rwanda while advancing regional integration and economic cooperation.
“The Kenyan Cabinet has approved the movement of about 40,000 metric tonnes of fuel to Rwanda through our pipeline from Mombasa. We are committed to ensuring a deeper relationship with our neighbours,” Mudavadi said.
The arrangement is expected to strengthen Kenya’s position as East Africa’s leading petroleum transit hub while providing Rwanda, a landlocked country, with a more reliable fuel supply route. Nduhungirehe welcomed the agreement, saying it will help stabilise fuel supplies in Rwanda and support the smooth running of economic activities.
“That will be about 52 million litres, which is approximately our consumption for one month. It will serve us well,” Nduhungirehe said.
Under the agreement, petroleum products destined for Rwanda will be received through the Port of Mombasa before being transported through Kenya’s pipeline network, reducing logistical challenges associated with fuel imports.
Mudavadi said Kenya’s decision to facilitate the transit of fuel to Rwanda reflects Nairobi’s commitment to regional integration, shared prosperity, and the strengthening of economic ties with neighbouring countries.
During the talks, Mudavadi also sought Rwanda’s support for two Kenyan candidates seeking positions at international judicial institutions, including the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Court (ICC).
“Kenya remains committed to strengthening regional partnerships and advancing Africa’s voice in international institutions,” Mudavadi said.
