Cape Verde produced one of the biggest shocks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after holding reigning European champions Spain to a remarkable 0-0 draw in their first-ever match at football’s biggest tournament.
Playing in Group H, the tournament debutants defied the odds with a disciplined defensive display that frustrated a star-studded Spanish side for the entire 90 minutes. Spain dominated possession with nearly 75 percent of the ball and fired 27 attempts at goal, but failed to find a breakthrough against a resilient Cape Verde team.
The standout performer was 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha, who produced a series of crucial saves to keep Spain at bay. The veteran shot-stopper denied several clear chances, including efforts from Ferran Torres, Mikel Oyarzabal, Aymeric Laporte and Pedri, earning him the Player of the Match award.
Spain came closest to scoring late in the first half when Ferran Torres struck the crossbar from close range before Vozinha tipped Oyarzabal’s follow-up header over the bar. Even the introduction of teenage sensation Lamine Yamal in the second half failed to unlock Cape Verde’s stubborn defence.
While much of the game was played in Cape Verde’s half, the African side nearly pulled off an even greater upset. Diney Borges had a late chance to snatch victory, but his header was saved by Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simón.
At the final whistle, emotional scenes unfolded as Vozinha left the pitch in tears after helping his nation secure its first-ever World Cup point. The result leaves Group H wide open and gives Cape Verde renewed belief that a place in the knockout stages may be within reach.
For Spain, one of the tournament favourites, the draw serves as an early warning that possession alone will not guarantee success. For Cape Verde, however, it was a historic night that will be remembered as one of the greatest moments in the country’s football history.
