Rwanda Mourns Dafroza Gauthier, Advocate for Justice for Genocide Victims

The government honours the late genocide justice campaigner for her decades-long efforts to document evidence and pursue accountability for the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The Government of Rwanda has paid tribute to Dafroza Mukarungongi Gauthier, remembering her contribution to efforts to preserve the history of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and pursue justice for those responsible.

In an announcement issued on October 3, 2026, the government said Gauthier dedicated herself to gathering evidence and supporting efforts to bring genocide suspects to justice.

Dafroza worked alongside her husband, Alain Gauthier, through the Collectif des Parties Civiles pour le Rwanda (CPCR), an organisation established to pursue accountability in France for people suspected of involvement in the genocide. Government of Rwanda research documented the couple’s work gathering witness testimony, consulting archives, and reviewing evidence from Rwanda’s Gacaca courts for submission to French prosecutors.

The Rwandan government said Gauthier’s commitment to truth, justice and preserving the history of the genocide had left an enduring legacy.

In recognition of her contribution to strengthening Rwanda’s international image and advancing relations between Rwanda and other countries, Dafroza received the ring Ubucuti – Igihango in 2017.

The government extended its condolences to Alain Gauthier, describing him as her partner in the struggle, as well as to her family, friends and others who worked alongside her.

Gauthier’s death comes as Rwanda continues efforts to preserve the history of the genocide and pursue accountability for those accused of participating in the killings. Her work with the CPCR contributed to investigations and legal proceedings concerning genocide suspects living in France.
