Nairobi has officially submitted its bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, seeking to make history as the first African city to stage the global athletics showpiece.
A successful bid would mark a major milestone for Kenya and African athletics, bringing some of the world’s leading athletes to a country renowned for its long-distance running tradition.
Hosting the championships would also provide an opportunity to showcase Kenya’s sporting talent and strengthen Nairobi’s profile as a destination for major international sporting events.
The event could generate wider economic opportunities through tourism, hospitality, transport, local businesses and event services, while creating a platform for athletes and young people to engage with international athletics.
For Kenya, which has produced generations of world-class distance runners, bringing the World Athletics Championships to Nairobi would also represent an opportunity to celebrate the country’s athletics heritage while investing further in the development of the sport.
If successful, Nairobi would become the first African host city for the World Athletics Championships, giving the continent a new opportunity to demonstrate its capacity to stage one of the world’s biggest athletics events.
