A fatal stampede at the entrance of Nyayo National Stadium during Nigerian music star Asake’s concert on December 20 claimed the life of 20-year-old Karen Lojore, authorities and event organisers have confirmed.
According to a spokesperson for Kenya’s National Police Service, the incident occurred as fans queued to enter the stadium. “While the situation later calmed down and fans were able to access the stadium with the concert progressing, an unfortunate case of a 20-year-old woman who was pressed to death near the entry point was recorded,” the officer told the BBC. Heavy rain reportedly worsened the congestion, and several other fans were injured.
Event organiser Tukutane Entertainment acknowledged the “loss of life” in a statement on Instagram, while Asake shared his grief on his Instagram Story. He described himself as “devastated by the tragic incident” and extended his condolences to Karen Lojore’s family, friends, and loved ones. “I pledge to support and do my best to understand what happened. Those responsible should be held accountable. Music has always been my way of sharing love and joy, and it breaks my heart that anyone had to experience such loss,” he wrote.
Kenyans across social media have expressed their sympathies, with family and friends of the deceased calling for a thorough investigation and justice.
This marks another fatal crowd incident linked to Asake’s performances. In December 2022, two people were killed in a crowd crush at London’s Brixton Academy during one of his shows.
