Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Davido has seen his uncle, Ademola Adeleke, secure a second term as governor of Osun State, days after the singer appealed to U.S. President Donald Trump and the international community to pay close attention to the election.
Adeleke was declared the winner after securing 511,067 votes, defeating his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who received 444,815 votes. African Democratic Congress candidate Najeem Salam finished third with 17,180 votes.The result gave Adeleke a winning margin of 66,252 votes and secured another four-year term in office.
The victory comes after Davido publicly raised concerns about the possibility of violence, intimidation and disruption during the election. In an appeal shared on social media on August 11, the singer directly addressed U.S. President Donald Trump and called on the international community to monitor the situation in Osun.
Davido said his priority was to see a peaceful election in which voters could exercise their rights without fear, while urging authorities to protect voters and respect the outcome of the ballot.The singer’s intervention attracted significant attention because of his close family connection to the governor. Davido, whose real name is David Adeleke, is Ademola Adeleke’s nephew, and he has openly supported his uncle’s political career.Ahead of the election, Davido had also become actively involved in Adeleke’s re-election campaign.
In May, he announced that he would temporarily suspend his music activities to campaign for his uncle and was named chairman of a youth campaign mobilisation team.Following the election, Adeleke’s victory marks another chapter in a political story that has increasingly drawn attention beyond Nigeria’s political circles because of the governor’s famous family connection.
Davido is one of Africa’s most internationally recognised musicians, with a global fan base and a career spanning Afrobeats, pop and international collaborations. For the singer, however, the Osun election became more than a family matter.
His public appeals placed him at the centre of a wider conversation about electoral peace, democracy and the responsibility of public figures to speak out during politically sensitive moments.Adeleke’s victory now gives the family another reason to celebrate, as the governor prepares to begin his second term in office.
The result also strengthens Adeleke’s political position in Osun, following his first election as governor in 2022. His re-election means he will continue leading the southwestern Nigerian state for another four years.
