Rwanda has reportedly emerged as a potential host for a Formula 1 race in 2028, as the championship explores venues for future calendar slots.
According to reports, Formula 1 is in discussions with several potential destinations, including Hockenheim in Germany, Thailand, South Africa, Argentina and Rwanda.
For Rwanda, hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix would represent a major step in the country’s ambition to establish itself as a destination for major international sporting events. Kigali has already hosted major competitions and global events, including the FIA General Assembly and Awards, the UCI Road World Championships, and other high-profile sporting and business gatherings.
A Formula 1 event could bring significant international attention to Rwanda, while creating opportunities for tourism, hospitality, investment, media and local businesses.
Rwanda has also been positioning itself as a growing destination for motorsport, most notably through the Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally, part of the African Rally Championship.
However, the reported talks do not mean Rwanda has been confirmed as a Formula 1 host. Any potential race would still depend on negotiations, infrastructure requirements, commercial agreements and approval of the final Formula 1 calendar.
If Rwanda ultimately secures a place on the 2028 calendar, it would become one of the most significant sporting events ever hosted by the country and could further strengthen Kigali’s position on the global events map.
