Kigali underscored its position as a growing centre for sport and innovation on Tuesday as the Basketball Africa League (BAL) Innovation Summit 2026 convened executives, investors and technology firms during the league’s playoffs.
Held at the Mövenpick Hotel Kigali under the theme “Beyond the Game: Building the Future of Sport, Business & Culture in Africa,” the summit featured panel discussions and fireside conversations on how technology, investment and culture are reshaping African sport.
The event, staged alongside the BAL postseason, brought together athletes, startup founders, corporate partners and global tech companies exploring opportunities in the continent’s sports economy.
Discussions focused on the commercial growth of African basketball, digital fan engagement, athlete branding and the increasing role of artificial intelligence and data analytics in sports operations.
Companies including Amazon Web Services (AWS), ServiceNow and GreenRide Africa highlighted basketball’s value as a gateway to Africa’s young consumer base and a platform for broader business and technology adoption.
AWS and ServiceNow executives pointed to expanding use of cloud computing, automation and AI to improve performance analysis, broadcasting and operational efficiency across sports organisations.
GreenRide Africa emphasised sport’s role in sustainability messaging and urban mobility awareness, citing basketball partnerships as a channel for wider social impact.
BAL President Amadou Gallo Fall said the league’s strategy extends beyond competition, aiming to link basketball with entrepreneurship, media and youth development while strengthening its commercial foundations.
Speakers said sports sponsorship in Africa is increasingly shifting toward long-term strategic partnerships tied to innovation, culture and economic growth rather than traditional advertising.
