Today’s pass‑out ceremony at the Police Training School (PTS) in Gishari, Rwamagana District, saw 1,905 trainees, including 337 female officers, successfully complete the Basic Police Course — marking one of the largest intakes in recent years. The trainees are now set to join the Rwanda National Police (RNP) and other security agencies as they begin their professional duties across the country.
The Basic Police Course is the foundational training program for recruits entering the police force. It typically encompasses intensive classroom instruction, physical conditioning, and practical field exercises designed to prepare officers for a wide range of policing duties, from community engagement and road safety to public order management and operational skills. The course usually lasts about 9–12 months, with rigorous academic and physical requirements that culminate in this pass‑out ceremony.
Senior government and police officials attended the ceremony, in line with tradition observed at previous PTS Gishari graduations, where leaders applaud the new officers’ dedication and urge them to uphold professionalism, discipline, and integrity in service to the nation. In fact, the previous 20th intake in October 2024 saw over 2,200 trainees, including 479 women, graduate and join various departments of the national security services.
Among the graduates this year are recruits who will serve in various regions and departments of the RNP. Female participation has grown steadily, reflecting ongoing efforts within the police to promote gender balance and inclusion — a trend seen in earlier intakes, where hundreds of women have joined the force after completing the same Basic Police Course.

Officers commissioned at earlier ceremonies have received ranks such as Police Constable upon graduation and are deployed across different units to support law enforcement, community security, and national peace. In previous years, thousands of new officers have joined the force following similar training, highlighting the role of PTS Gishari in building Rwanda’s professional police service.
The Police Training School Gishari, established in 2000, offers multiple courses including the Basic Police Course, Cadet Officer training, peace operations preparation, and specialized courses for career development, reinforcing the capacity of Rwanda’s security sector overall.
