Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo has died after a private helicopter crashed in Marondera Rural, east of Harare, on Wednesday evening.

Chivayo’s family spokesperson, Herbert Chivayo, confirmed the businessman’s death as well as that of his wife, Lucy Muteke.

Zimbabwean authorities confirmed that a helicopter carrying a high-profile businessman, other passengers and two pilots crashed in the Marondera area at around 5 p.m. local time. Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana said there were no survivors.

Emergency services were dispatched to the crash site, while police said further details on the victims would be released as investigations continue. The cause of the crash has not yet been established.

Chivayo was a prominent and highly visible figure in Zimbabwean business circles, with interests in infrastructure and energy-related projects. He was also known for high-profile philanthropic gestures and involvement in Zimbabwean football.

The crash comes weeks after another fatal helicopter accident in the region, highlighting continuing concerns around aviation safety and emergency response following aircraft accidents.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding Wednesday’s crash, including the aircraft’s condition, flight operations and weather conditions at the time of the accident.
