Rwanda-Mozambique security cooperation to continue

Rwanda’s Foreign Minister, Olivier Nduhungirehe, says Mozambique has secured funding to sustain the deployment of Rwandan security forces in Cabo Delgado province, where operations against an Islamic State-linked insurgency continue.

In a statement on X, he said Rwanda will now work directly with Mozambique after concerns over reduced European Union support for the mission through the European Peace Facility (EPF).

Rwandan troops were deployed in 2021 at Mozambique’s request to help restore security in the gas-rich northern region. Kigali says the mission has helped stabilize key areas, enable the return of displaced communities, reopen schools and businesses, and support training of Mozambican forces.

The improved security has also supported major energy activity in the region, including TotalEnergies’ liquefied natural gas project.
