Masai Ujiri, one of the most influential figures in global basketball, has joined the ownership group of the Toronto Tempo as a Principal Owner, marking a major step for women’s basketball.
Ujiri is best known for leading the Toronto Raptors to their historic 2019 NBA Championship title, becoming one of the most respected executives in the sport. Beyond the NBA, he has built a strong connection with Africa through his foundation, Giants of Africa, which empowers young people through basketball.
His move to the Tempo is expected to bring that same African-driven vision to women’s sport. Speaking on his new role, Ujiri described the project as “a defining moment in women’s basketball globally,” highlighting the opportunity to build something bigger than just a team.
A key part of his involvement is the launch of Tempo Rising, a mentorship program that supports women and non-binary coaches, especially at the grassroots level. The initiative will provide training, guidance, and real coaching experience.
Ujiri will work alongside General Manager Monica Wright Rogers and Head Coach Sandy Brondello to drive the program and grow the sport. The franchise is also backed by global sports icon Serena Williams, adding to its international profile.
For Africa, Ujiri’s involvement signals new opportunities. His continued focus on youth development and leadership could open doors for African coaches, players, and future sports leaders, strengthening the continent’s growing role in global basketball.
