The UCI has recognized Kigali for successfully hosting the 2025 Road World Championships and promoting green transport.

The city of Kigali has received an international award from the Union Cycliste Internationale, also known as the UCI, after successfully hosting the 2025 UCI Road World Championships. The award, called the “UCI Bike City Label Award,” was presented during the UCI Mobility and Bike City Forum held in Athens, Greece.

Kigali received the award because of its strong efforts in promoting cycling, protecting the environment, and improving green transportation systems. The city has invested in better cycling roads and sustainable transport solutions that reduce pollution and support clean mobility.

This became a trending issue because Rwanda made history in September 2025 by becoming the first African country ever to host the UCI Road World Championships. The event brought together cyclists and visitors from more than 100 countries and showed the world that Africa can successfully organize major international sports events.
The championship was held from September 21 to 28, 2025, in Kigali, and it greatly boosted tourism, business, and Rwanda’s international image. It also inspired many young Africans who dream of becoming professional cyclists and showed that sports can create opportunities for youth across the continent.

This award is important for Africa because it proves that African cities can host world-class events and lead in sustainable development. It may encourage more international competitions, investments, and tourism opportunities to come to Africa in the future.
