The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has called for stronger coordination among regional and international actors to help end the conflict in Sudan, warning that no single country or organization can address the crisis alone.
Speaking during the Third IGAD Meeting of Special Envoys on Sudan in Nairobi, IGAD Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu said the conflict has evolved into a complex crisis characterized by armed confrontation, a worsening humanitarian situation, institutional fragmentation and broader regional implications.
“No single state, no single organisation and no single mediation initiative can adequately respond to the scale and complexity of the crisis. We cannot do this alone. We can only make a meaningful difference collectively,” Dr. Workneh said.
He emphasized that the scale of the crisis requires a coordinated response involving regional bodies, international organizations and development partners.
Dr. Workneh noted that Sudan has reached a critical stage, with ongoing civilian engagement beginning to generate what he described as meaningful political convergence around key principles, including the unity of Sudan, the preservation of state institutions, the rejection of a military solution to the conflict, civilian leadership, and Sudanese ownership of the peace process.
While cautioning that these developments do not yet amount to a political settlement, he said they represent the most significant opportunity currently available for advancing peace.
“Sudan does not lack attention. It requires strategic coherence. It does not lack initiatives. It requires disciplined complementarity,” he added.
The Executive Secretary stressed that Sudanese citizens must remain at the center of any political process. At the same time, regional and international partners work together to support dialogue and create conditions for a sustainable resolution to the conflict.
The meeting brought together special envoys, diplomats and representatives of mediation organizations from across the region and beyond, as IGAD seeks to strengthen a unified approach to restoring peace and stability in Sudan.
