President Paul Kagame has arrived in Conakry, Guinea, where he joins President Mamadi Doumbouya for the official launch of the Simandou Iron Ore Project — widely recognized as the largest ongoing mining venture in the world.
The Simandou deposit, located in southeastern Guinea, is considered the world’s biggest untapped iron ore reserve, estimated to contain between three and four billion tonnes of high-grade recoverable iron ore. Once fully operational, the project is expected to reach an annual output of around 120 million tonnes by 2030, positioning Guinea as a key global supplier in the steel production value chain.
The launch of the Simandou Project marks a significant milestone for Guinea and Africa’s broader industrialization ambitions. It is expected to attract substantial foreign investment, create jobs, and contribute to the continent’s mineral-driven economic transformation.
On Wednesday, President Kagame and his host, President Mamadi Doumbouya, are set to address the opening of this year’s Transform Africa Summit (TAS), organized by the Smart Africa Alliance under the theme “AI for Africa: Innovate Locally, Impact Globally.”
The summit held every two years in Rwanda — home to the Smart Africa Secretariat — brings together heads of state, policymakers, industry leaders, and innovators to explore how artificial intelligence can accelerate Africa’s digital transformation. Discussions will focus on how AI can strengthen governance, boost economic integration, and foster homegrown innovation across the continent.
