Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates is in Rwanda this week to assess the country’s progress in healthcare, agriculture and digital public infrastructure, areas that have become central to Rwanda’s development agenda.
The visit is expected to include engagements with government officials, development partners and innovators working to advance technology-driven solutions in health and other key sectors. Gates has praised Rwanda’s achievements, describing the country as a model for how strategic investments and effective implementation can transform public health outcomes.
In a message shared on social media, Gates said he was eager to learn more about Rwanda’s development journey and the innovations driving progress across the country.
“I’m excited to be in Rwanda this week to learn more about the country’s progress in health, agriculture and digital public infrastructure,” Gates said.
“Over the last 25 years, Rwanda has delivered one of Africa’s most remarkable health transformations. The country shows what is possible when governments not only invest in life-saving technologies but focus on getting those technologies into the hands of the people who need them most.”
Gates also highlighted the long-standing partnership between Rwanda and the Gates Foundation, noting that the foundation has worked with Rwanda and other African countries for more than two decades to strengthen health systems and expand access to critical services.
The philanthropist added that he looks forward to engaging with leaders, institutions and communities helping to shape the continent’s future.
“I’m looking forward to the conversations ahead, and to learning more from the people and institutions helping shape Africa’s future,” Gates added.
Rwanda has earned international recognition for major gains in healthcare, including expanded access to medical services, improvements in maternal and child health, and the adoption of digital technologies to strengthen service delivery.
The visit also comes as Rwanda continues to invest in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and digital public infrastructure to improve efficiency and access in sectors including health, education and governance.
Gates’ engagements are expected to focus on how innovation and partnerships can accelerate development and improve the lives of communities across Africa.
