MTN Rwanda has crossed the 8-million-subscriber mark, reflecting the growing adoption of mobile technology and digital services across the country.
According to the company’s financial results for the nine months that ended September 30, this year, mobile subscribers increased by 6.9 percent to reach 8.1 million, while active data users grew by 7.5 percent to 2.5 million. The growth was largely driven by rising smartphone penetration and increased demand for digital financial services.
MTN’s mobile money platform, MoMo, also continued its strong performance, with active users up by 12.2 percent to 5.8 million. The company’s merchant network grew to 578,000, signaling deeper integration of digital payments in everyday transactions.
Average monthly MoMo transactions reached a record 246 million, showing how mobile money has become a central part of daily commerce. “Through innovation and inclusion, we are not just powering transactions, we are powering transformation,” said Chantal Kagame, Chief Executive Officer of Mobile Money Rwanda Ltd.
Total service revenue rose by 14.2 percent to Rwf 216.2 billion, supported by gains in data and MoMo revenues as more customers adopted cashless and digital platforms. Data revenue alone increased by 7.9 percent to Rwf 35.8 billion, driven by a 43.7 percent rise in 4G users to 1.5 million.
MTN’s CEO Monzer Ali described the milestone as “a defining moment” for the company, saying it reflects both customer trust and Rwanda’s progress toward digital inclusion.
“Through initiatives like Tunga Taci na MTN, we are making smartphones more accessible and ensuring that no one is left behind in the country’s digital future,” he said.
Launched in partnership with Yello Digital Platforms, Tunga Taci na MTN enables customers to acquire smartphones through flexible payment plans. The initiative has contributed to an increase in data consumption and broader access to online services.
The company’s mobile money subsidiary, MoMo Rwanda Ltd, saw its revenue grow by 30.2 percent to Rwf 109.4 billion, supported by expanding merchant networks and increased customer activity.
MTN Rwanda’s management said the company remains focused on executing its Ambition 2025 strategy, which aims to strengthen digital inclusion and scale up mobile-based financial services.
“Our performance demonstrates the strength of our financial foundation and our commitment to delivering long-term value,” said Dunsan Ayodele Stober, Acting Chief Financial Officer.
