Kamonyi: How CanalBox is ‘Greening Rwanda’s Future’, One Tree at a Time

Community Engagement and Technological Innovation Drive Environmental Initiative

In Kagarama village, Kamonyi District, a significant environmental initiative took place on October 24, 2024, as Isaro Econext and Group Vivendi Africa (GVA) Rwanda, through their brand CanalBox, collaborated with students and community members to plant avocado trees. This event precedes Rwanda’s official launch of the 2024-2025 tree planting season, which aims to plant 65 million seedlings during this period.

This initiative is not merely an agricultural effort; it embodies a larger narrative of community connection and innovation. CanalBox Rwanda’s approach reflects a commitment to nurturing communities and protecting the environment through technology.

“We are in partnership with Isaro Econext, a young start-up, to plant trees and protect the environment in which we live as Rwandans, and as a business that works closely with our customers,” stated Aimé Abizera, CEO of CanalBox Rwanda. He emphasized that the initiative goes beyond tree planting, aiming to foster a sense of belonging among employees and community members while engaging them in shaping a greener future.

The project is set to plant thousands of avocado trees across Kamonyi and other districts, with some trees being planted in community fields and schools, including Groupe Scolaire de Kagarama Adventist. The trees will be monitored through a digital tracking system developed by Isaro Econext, utilizing GPS data to track their growth and location.

“We really believe in how technology can protect nature while supporting young generations,” Abizera added, expressing optimism for future initiatives. “This is just the beginning; next year we will be back to do even more.”

For local residents like Odette Mukarutamu, 67, the avocado trees represent more than just environmental restoration. “These avocado trees will help us fight malnutrition and earn some income,” she shared. “When they start bearing fruit, I will be able to sell some and feed my children nutritious meals; it is a blessing for my family.”

Local authorities have also recognized the initiative’s potential impact. Justin Mukiza, Head of Agriculture and Natural Resources in Kamonyi, highlighted the economic and social benefits of avocado cultivation. “Avocado trees can bring both nutrition and income; in this area, one avocado sells between Rwf100 and Rwf200, and a single mature tree can yield up to 200 fruits; that’s a good return for a farmer,” he noted.

Students at G.S Kagarama Adventist expressed enthusiasm about the initiative. Emerine Ineza, 18, remarked, “They will give us clean air, prevent erosion, and add nutritious fruits to our diet. We’ll also take part in caring for them.”

CanalBox’s engagement in this initiative reflects a corporate philosophy centered on four pillars: education, technology, sports, and community service. Abizera explained, “We partner with universities such as Rwanda Polytechnic to offer academic and professional internships. We’re proud that 40 percent of our employees are women; no young girl or woman is left behind in our technology advancement endeavor.”

Beyond its social responsibility, CanalBox is also transforming digital connectivity in Rwanda. With packages starting at Rwf 25,000 for 50 Mbps and Rwf 40,000 for 200 Mbps, customers benefit from ultra-fast, unlimited fiber internet, complete with free installation and routers.

Kristian Gasaro, founder of Isaro Econext, expressed a shared vision for sustainability. “We stand as dreamers and doers united by a common goal; a greener future. Every project is like a bead in the necklace of sustainability. Together with CanalBox, we’re crafting a legacy that will be cherished for generations.”

From enhancing digital connectivity to planting trees that nourish communities, CanalBox exemplifies how technology can connect not just devices, but also people, purpose, and the planet.
