Former professional footballer and environmentalist, Mathieu Flamini, recently shared his admiration for Rwanda following a visit that highlighted the country’s commitment to sustainability and wildlife conservation. Flamini, co-founder and CEO of GFBiochemicals and a Young Global Leader at the World Economic Forum, was invited by the Government of Rwanda as an Arsenal ambassador.
He said that during his visit, Flamini witnessed Rwanda’s impressive efforts in environmental preservation, particularly the protection of ecosystems and the reintroduction of gorilla families. He noted the pivotal role of local communities, whose engagement has transformed tourism into a sustainable, locally driven economy. “Monthly community waste-collection days practised not only in Kigali but also across rural areas show how collective action can create meaningful change,” Flamini said, highlighting Rwanda as a model for other nations.
Flamini also had the honor of meeting President Paul Kagame to discuss the country’s long-term sustainability strategies. He participated in the annual naming ceremony of a newborn baby gorilla, describing it as a cultural moment that showcases Rwanda’s conservation achievements.

One experience Flamini described as particularly moving was spending a day with Rambo’s gorilla family, standing just a meter and a half from a silverback. “It was a calm, powerful reminder of our place in nature and our responsibility to protect it,” he said.
Reflecting on the country’s spirit, Flamini praised Rwanda’s resilience and unity. “A nation that has faced immense hardship now stands as a testament to renewal. The warmth and openness of its people left me with a lasting sense of hope,” he shared.
Flamini expressed gratitude to President Kagame, Arsenal Football Club, and One&Only Rwanda for making his journey possible, and especially to the Rwandan people for their hospitality. He concluded, “Rwanda will forever hold a place in my heart.”
