The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) Engineer Contingent, working alongside engineers from the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), has officially begun joint reconstruction works in Montego Bay, St James Parish, following widespread destruction caused by Hurricane Melissa.
The RDF engineers arrived in Jamaica last week and immediately began assessments in areas heavily affected by the hurricane, which caused extensive damage to homes and community infrastructure.
The reconstruction effort started with the rebuilding of houses for residents whose homes were severely damaged, marking the beginning of hands-on humanitarian and engineering support to affected communities.
The joint operation reflects close cooperation between the RDF and JDF in support of Jamaica’s recovery and rebuilding process. By combining technical expertise, engineers from both forces are restoring damaged structures to improve living conditions for families impacted by the storm.

RDF Engineer Contingent Commander Col Moses Kayigamba said the mission goes beyond repairing buildings, emphasizing solidarity with the people of Jamaica and contributing to long-term resilience. He added that all reconstruction works are being carried out in coordination with Jamaican local authorities and the JDF to ensure alignment with national recovery priorities.
The deployment of the RDF Engineer Contingent underscores Rwanda’s commitment to international solidarity, cooperation, and humanitarian assistance in response to natural disasters.
