The Government of Rwanda has delivered humanitarian assistance to Mozambique following severe floods that have caused widespread destruction, displaced hundreds of thousands of people, and claimed numerous lives across the country.

According to Rwanda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the assistance was dispatched on Tuesday February 3 as Mozambique continues to grapple with the impact of intense rainfall that triggered river overflows and flash floods in several regions.

The shipment includes 20 metric tons of food supplies, emergency relief items, and medicines, aimed at addressing urgent humanitarian needs among affected communities. Rwandan authorities said an additional consignment is expected to arrive in the coming days, as part of continued support to Mozambique’s recovery efforts.

Mozambique has been hit hard by seasonal rains, with low-lying areas and communities near major river basins among the worst affected. Floodwaters have damaged homes, infrastructure, farmland, and access roads, forcing many families to flee to safer areas while placing pressure on emergency and health services.

The floods are the latest in a series of climate-related disasters to affect Mozambique, which remains one of southern Africa’s most disaster-prone countries due to its geography and exposure to extreme weather events.

Rwanda’s assistance forms part of broader regional solidarity efforts as southern African countries respond to the humanitarian consequences of extreme weather, with relief agencies and governments working to provide food, shelter, medical care, and clean water to displaced populations.

Authorities in Mozambique continue to assess the full scale of the damage as relief operations remain ongoing.
