Investment Aimed at Enhancing Production Capacity and Supporting Local Economy
The management of SKOL Brewery Ltd has announced plans to invest between $25 million and $35 million over the next five years to expand its operations in Rwanda. This significant investment reflects the company’s commitment to enhancing its production capabilities and contributing to the local economy.
The announcement was made on Thursday, October 16, during a visit by the Minister of Trade and Industry, Prudence Sebahizi, accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MINICOM) and other government institutions. The delegation toured the brewery as part of a nationwide programme aimed at assessing industrial performance, challenges, and opportunities to boost productivity and job creation.
During the visit, Thibault Relecom, owner of SKOL Brewery, shared insights into the company’s growth journey since its establishment in 2010. He highlighted the progress achieved in production and employment, noting that SKOL has become a significant player in the Rwandan beverage market.
Relecom emphasized that while SKOL operates in several countries, the Rwandan brewery is distinguished by its production of locally beloved brands such as Virunga and Gatanu, which have garnered strong consumer loyalty. He commended the Rwandan government for fostering an investor-friendly environment, stating, “We are very pleased that the Government of Rwanda supports us as investors and remains close to us to ensure our operations run smoothly while offering valuable guidance.”
He further expressed optimism about the future, saying, “Our goal is to continue expanding because the market is growing, and we believe Rwanda offers the right environment for sustainable investment.” However, Relecom also pointed out infrastructure challenges that affect operations, particularly the poor condition of the road leading to the brewery. “The road we use to bring in materials and distribute our products is in bad shape, it damages vehicles and slows down transport. Driving on it feels like a massage,” he added with a smile.
The planned investment of $25–35 million is expected to be directed towards expanding production capacity, improving operational efficiency, and supporting future growth initiatives. Minister Sebahizi commended SKOL for its contributions to Rwanda’s manufacturing sector and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting local industries. “Our policy is to encourage industries that meet the needs of Rwandans while adding value to local resources,” the Minister stated.
She added, “We want them to produce enough for the local market and also export to the region and beyond.” Beyond its business operations, SKOL has emerged as a key supporter of sports and education in Rwanda, notably through its contributions to football and cycling development, as well as scholarship programmes for students at various academic levels.
As SKOL Brewery embarks on this ambitious expansion plan, it aims not only to enhance its production capabilities but also to play a pivotal role in the economic development of Rwanda, aligning with the government’s vision for a robust manufacturing sector.
