Cameroon is advancing its digital transformation with a major push on connectivity and cybersecurity. On January 21, 2026, CAMTEL and Commercial Bank-Cameroun (CBC) signed a 44.884 billion FCFA financing agreement to fund the first phase of the Mobile Network Expansion (MNE) project.

The initiative aims to densify, desaturate, and extend the country’s mobile network, improving connectivity, promoting digital inclusion, and supporting the growth of the digital economy. CBC acted as lead arranger and underwriter, reflecting strong confidence in CAMTEL’s strategy.

The financing builds on steps taken just a day earlier to strengthen Cameroon’s national cybersecurity capabilities. On January 20, 2026, the Computer Incident Response Team (CIRT) of the National Agency for Information and Communication Technologies (ANTIC) received advanced cybersecurity equipment under the World Bank-backed PATNUC project.

The upgrade, valued at over FCFA 735 million, includes servers, storage consoles, investigation platforms, workstations, and vulnerability scanning and penetration testing tools. According to ANTIC, these assets will enable the agency to detect, prevent, and respond to cyber threats, safeguarding critical infrastructure and providing a secure environment for digital services.

Judith Yah Sunday epse Achidi, CAMTEL’s Managing Director, said the MNE funding “strengthens our ability to deploy faster, further, and more efficiently,” highlighting the project’s role in boosting nationwide digital infrastructure and supporting innovation, entrepreneurship, and public service delivery.

Together, the MNE project and upgraded cybersecurity systems represent a coordinated approach to modernizing Cameroon’s digital ecosystem, combining expanded access with enhanced protection. This strategy positions Cameroon as a leader in regional technological development and a safer, more inclusive digital economy.
