Authorities in Kasai Oriental, in central Democratic Republic of Congo, have placed the fight against food insecurity at the center of the province’s development agenda.

Speaking in Kinshasa on Wednesday, Governor Jean-Paul Mbwebwe described food security as his primary priority, stressing the urgent need for practical strategies to address persistent shortages, particularly in Kasai Oriental. He said government agencies are currently working on identifying effective techniques to strengthen food production and improve resilience.

The governor explained that a new governance framework has been introduced to strengthen collaboration with farmers’ organizations and to support agricultural producers across different sectors. He added that his visit to the capital also included participation in workshops focused on agriculture, reforestation, and efforts to curb deforestation.

On the Local Development Program for 145 Territories (PDL-145T), Mbwebwe admitted that progress remains uneven. Several projects, including health facilities and schools, are still incomplete in some areas. He noted that a recent assessment conducted by a presidential adviser confirmed that the program has not yet met its initial objectives.

The governor made the remarks as he concluded an official mission in Kinshasa linked to the State of the Nation address delivered by the President on December 8, 2025, before a joint sitting of Parliament. He has since returned to Mbuji-Mayi, the provincial capital.
