Kenya Signs Landmark Deal for Nairobi Arena Under Railway City Redevelopment Plan

Kenya has taken a major step forward in its urban transformation agenda after President William Ruto witnessed the signing of a lease agreement for the construction of a modern arena and entertainment district in the heart of the capital.

The agreement, signed at State House between the Zaria Group and the Kenya Railways Corporation, marks the first major development under the flagship Nairobi Railway City Project.

The planned multi-purpose arena and integrated entertainment district are expected to anchor the broader redevelopment, positioning Nairobi’s central business district as a leading hub for sports, entertainment, culture, and commerce in East Africa and beyond.

Speaking during the ceremony, President Ruto said the project reflects a shift in how infrastructure is defined, expanding beyond traditional investments in transport to include platforms that support talent, creativity, and the wider economy.

“Through this agreement, we are establishing a new development anchor within the Railway City, a modern, multi-purpose arena and an integrated entertainment district that will host international events, support our creative industries, and expand Nairobi’s global footprint,” he said.

The project will be implemented as a long-term public-private partnership aligned with Kenya’s national infrastructure priorities. It also complements other major developments, including Talanta Stadium and the Bomas International Convention Complex, forming part of a broader ecosystem aimed at attracting global events and investment.

According to the government, the arena is expected to be delivered within 12 months and could generate up to 25,000 jobs annually across construction, operations, hospitality, and the creative sector.

The wider Nairobi Railway City initiative will transform the Central Railway Station into a modern multi-modal transport hub integrating rail, bus rapid transit, and non-motorised transport systems. Once complete, it is projected to handle more than 400,000 commuters daily by 2030.

The master plan also includes residential, commercial, and green spaces, forming a long-term urban renewal framework designed to modernise the capital and strengthen Kenya’s position as a regional economic hub.

Officials attending the signing included Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Cabinet Secretaries Davis Chirchir (Roads and Transport) and Salim Mvurya (Sports, Youth Affairs and Creative Economy), Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga, and Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga.

Chirchir said the government would provide the necessary infrastructure support to ensure the successful implementation of the project, while Mvurya noted that the arena would create opportunities for young people to develop and showcase their talents.

Zaria Group will lead the construction and long-term operation of the facility. The firm has previously delivered major projects in the region, including BK Arena and Amahoro Stadium in Kigali.

Co-founder Masai Ujiri described the project as a transformative investment that will serve not only Nairobi but the wider African continent.

“This is momentous; this is a business that will become an economic driver a hub not only for the city but also for Kenya and the entire Africa,” he said.

The project underscores a growing trend across African cities to integrate large-scale infrastructure with sports and entertainment developments as a strategy for economic growth and global competitiveness.
