Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal Legacy: 23 Years, Three Major Titles and a Record-Breaking Career

The Portuguese forward retires from international football with 234 appearances and 146 goals, leaving a legacy that transformed his country's standing in the global game.

Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable 23-year career with Portugal that reshaped the country’s football history and produced records unlikely to be matched for years.

The 41-year-old leaves the national team with 234 appearances and 146 goals, making him the most-capped and highest-scoring male international footballer in history.

Since making his Portugal debut in August 2003, Ronaldo has evolved from a promising young winger into the country’s most recognisable football figure, captaining the national team to three major international titles.

From European contenders to champions

Ronaldo’s greatest achievement with Portugal came at UEFA Euro 2016, when the country won its first major senior international trophy.

Portugal defeated hosts France 1–0 after extra time in the final. Although Ronaldo was forced off with an injury in the first half, he remained on the sidelines, encouraging and motivating his teammates as they secured the historic victory.

He later captained Portugal to two UEFA Nations League titles, winning the inaugural competition in 2019 and lifting the trophy again in 2025.

The 2019 campaign included a memorable hat-trick against Switzerland in the semi-finals, while the 2025 triumph demonstrated his continued influence at the age of 40.

A constant presence on the world stage

Ronaldo also became a defining figure in Portugal’s sustained presence at major international tournaments.

He represented the country at six consecutive FIFA World Cups, from Germany 2006 to the 2026 tournament, becoming the first male player to score at six different editions.

He also appeared at six consecutive European Championships, from 2004 to 2024, helping Portugal reach the final in 2004 before eventually winning the competition in 2016.

His longevity at the highest level helped make Portugal a regular presence in major tournament discussions and gave generations of Portuguese supporters a player to identify with on the global stage.

Rewriting international football records

Ronaldo’s international statistics place him among the most accomplished players in football history.

AchievementRecord
Portugal appearances234
International goals146
European Championship goals14
European Championship appearances30
World Cups scored at6

His 14 European Championship goals make him the competition’s all-time leading scorer, while his 30 appearances are also a tournament record.

An imperfect ending, an enduring legacy

Ronaldo’s departure comes after tensions with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus during the September international window, adding a difficult final chapter to an otherwise celebrated career.

Despite the circumstances surrounding his decision, his contribution to Portuguese football extends far beyond individual statistics and trophies.

He helped establish a winning culture, inspired younger generations and raised Portugal’s profile across the international sporting landscape.

For a country of around 11 million people, Ronaldo became a global sporting symbol whose influence reached beyond football.

His international career may have ended, but the records, trophies and inspiration he leaves behind will remain central to Portugal’s football story for generations.
