Rwandan President Paul Kagame has paid tribute to Qatar’s former Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, describing him as a visionary leader whose legacy transformed Qatar into one of the world’s most influential nations.
In a message of condolence shared on X, Kagame expressed sympathy to Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Qatari royal family, and the people of Qatar following the passing of the former ruler.
“My deepest condolences to my brother, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, his family and the people of Qatar on the passing of His Highness the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani,” Kagame wrote on X.
He praised Sheikh Hamad’s leadership, saying he would be remembered for laying the foundations of modern Qatar through ambitious economic development, international diplomacy, and long-term national investment.
“His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani will be remembered as a visionary leader who transformed Qatar into the remarkable nation it is today. His legacy of service to his people and commitment to friendship and cooperation among nations will endure for generations,” President Kagame said.
The Rwandan leader added that the people of Rwanda stand in solidarity with Qatar during its period of mourning.
“At this difficult time, the people of Rwanda and I stand with His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and our Qatari brothers and sisters,” he said.
Sheikh Hamad, who served as Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013, is widely credited with overseeing the country’s transformation into a global economic, diplomatic, and energy powerhouse. During his reign, Qatar expanded its liquefied natural gas industry, strengthened its international partnerships, and emerged as a major player in global mediation, investment, and development.
Kagame joined other world leaders in Doha to pay their respects, underscoring the close ties between Rwanda and Qatar. In recent years, the two countries have deepened cooperation in sectors including aviation, investment, tourism, infrastructure, and diplomacy, with Qatar becoming one of Rwanda’s key strategic partners in the Gulf region.
The tribute reflects not only the respect accorded to Sheikh Hamad’s legacy on the international stage but also the growing partnership between Rwanda and Qatar, built on shared interests in economic development and international cooperation.
